Fans of the Legend of Zelda series will be happy to know that Mario may not be the only animated movie Nintendo has under its belt. It has been rumored that Nintendo has also commissioned Illumination to make an animated film based on the iconic Nintendo franchise, the first movie of its kind.

The Legend of Zelda Movie: What We Know So Far

The Zelda film will reportedly be handled once again by Illumination, who is also the studio behind the upcoming Super Mario Bros Movie, which will be released in theaters on April 7, 2023.

As for the Zelda movie is concerned, however, nothing is known or definitive at this time other than the fact that Illumination will be returning to animate the film. This will technically be the second animated adaption of the Legend of Zelda franchise, following the original 1989 animated series. However, this would be the first movie based on the franchise.

The series first began in 1986 with the release of the original The Legend of Zelda and has since grown to comprise 19 games. The latest of these is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, released in 2017. The sequel, The Legend of  Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, will be released this year, on May 12, for the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo recently announced the formal opening of Nintendo Pictures to facilitate the development of various visual media based on their franchise, including movies, shows, and others. The Super Mario Bros Movie and The Legend of Zelda movie could be the first endeavors for the new studio, with new projects likely to be announced in the near future.
