LEGO has been keeping up with so many different franchises that video games felt like the natural evolution for the brick building company. Starting with Minecraft sets around the various adventures, LEGO also has created Super Mario sets. They’ve even gone so far as to recreate a whole LEGO NES and retro television set commemorating Nintendo’s history. It’s no wonder that LEGO has been paying much closer attention to their ideas submissions from fans all over the world.
24-year-old Viv Grannell sought to reimagine Sonic the Hedgehog in minifigure form. After reaching the required 10,000 supporters LEGO sets to be considered for production last March; the dreams of the blue blur making his brick debut is here. Announced today by LEGO Ideas, the Sonic Mania set is finally getting created with the production team working hard to create a great representation for the beloved blue hedgehog.

While Sonic has appeared in the LEGO Dimensions game before in minifigure form, this new set promises a whole slew of Sonic the Hedgehog flair. Production phases of LEGO sets take quite a bit of time though, so we can speculate what the set might include. From the promotional image, Grannell chose to focus on Green Hill Zone from Sonic Mania. Acting as one of SEGA’s more popular recent releases we can assume the final product will resemble the classic look of Sonic Mania. Featuring the Death Egg Robot and a few other badnicks from Doctor Robotnik, the mockup is a relatively small LEGO set. With the latest treatment of Nintendo’s Mario sets, fans can hope to see a more intuitive design for a scale lego model of Green Hill. With Sonic’s 30th anniversary speedily approaching in March of this year, fans can only hope that the hedgehog gets the much-needed representation.
