Expansion of the LEGO franchise set to happen with an exclusive partnership between Universal Pictures and the LEGO Group.

Universal Pictures has completed a five-year exclusive deal with the LEGO Group, which will lead to the development, production, and theatrical distribution of films constructed from combining original ideas with the much-loved colorful building blocks.

The deal was spearheaded by Donna Langley, Chairman, Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, and Jill Wilfert, Head of Entertainment of the LEGO Group – and the aim is to inject new imagination into the LEGO franchise.

Much like the Lego treatment given to  Jurassic Park- with Jurassic World: The Secret Exhibit and the 13-ep miniseries LEGO Jurassic World: Legend of Isla Nublar- there is now a lot of room to roam through and grow towards new franchises with LEGO.

Last year, Universal was the leader among a pack of studios chasing the rights to make future Lego movies. LEGO Group’s Head of Entertainment, Wilfert, who will serve as all LEGO projects under Universal.

She spoke of the partnership and said:

Under Universal, LEGO is set to explore more filmmaking opportunities. After the first film, The LEGO Movie, which launched in 2014, grossed a combined $1.1 billion globally, the notion of a franchise for the beloved building blocks became a reality. A second hit came in the form of The Lego Batman Movie, followed by LEGO Ninjago Movie, and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part.

Now with a shared vision and imagination, Universal and LEGO begin a new journey to inspire curiosity, creativity, and innovation with future endeavors. On to the next chapter of LEGO movies, we go!
