Hwang Dong-Hyuk, the writer and director of the wildly successful Squid Game, is considering asking Leonardo DiCaprio to join the series’ cast for the storyline beyond Season 2, which will come out sometime in 2024.

Hwang was present at a press conference in Seoul recently where he was questioned about the possibility of actors from Hollywood making it to Season 2 of Squid Game. He said that this was not part of his plan for the next season, but he is open to the idea of expanding the cast to include other international stars in the future “if time or chances allow”.

He said that while there will not be any known Hollywood actors in the next season, the possibility is present for the future. Season 2 will be set in Korea, but Season 3 might go to a new location, and since Leonardo DiCaprio is a big fan of Squid Game, so maybe he might make it to the show after Season 2.

The director also shared his plans and the release schedule for season 2 of Squid Game, confirming that shooting will begin in 2023, and new episodes will start in 2024. “We will start shooting Season 2 next year and it’ll be released the following year,” he said. The success of the first season will allow for a far larger budget for Season 2 and possibly beyond.

The show started off by inviting players to a chance to make a lot of money, by competing in various children’s games. But the catch was, that the games had very high stakes, mostly fatal. The games in the first season included Tug-of-War, which everyone is familiar with.

The games set to be included in Season 2 have not been confirmed, but Hwang says that the list has already been decided.

The first season was the biggest streaming hit of last year, with 214 million Netflix subscribers worldwide. Hot off the heels of the success of season 1, the director confirmed the existence of season 2, but it may not be focused on the contestants like before, but might explore the Korean police instead.
