The family of singer Lisa Marie Presley announced her death on January 12, 2023, almost three years after her son Benjamin Keough died by suicide. Losing her son at 27 left the heiress broken and devastated, so much so that she spent the rest of her life grieving his loss. She expressed the full extent of that grief in a note she penned to People last year in a bid to encourage others grieving to open up and embrace it as she did.
Lisa Marie Suffered A Cardiac Arrest
Months after the emotional essay, the actress passed away, following a cardiac arrest, two days after her appearance at the 2023 Golden Globes. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that paramedics responded to her home after she suffered a cardiac arrest.
They immediately transferred her to the hospital for treatment upon noticing signs of life. However, she passed away at the medical facility shortly after. Lisa’s mom, Priscilla Presley, confirmed her demise in a Statement to people, saying:
Priscilla enjoined the public to grant the family privacy as they dealt with the profound loss. The icon’s death was the second major loss the family has been forced to endure in the last three years.
Lisa Marie Presley Never Moved On From Her Son’s Death
In honor of National Grief Awareness Day last August, Lisa Marie penned a touching message about grief, featured in an August issue of the publication. In the article, the mom of four admitted she had been living in the “horrific reality of its unrelenting grips since her son’s demise.”
She admitted that while grief was an uncomfortable, potentially triggering subject for anyone, she hoped her take on the topic would help others who are grieving. Lisa Marie Presley also pointed out two important realities grieving her late son made her come to terms with, including the fact that she would have to grieve Benjamin until her death. The star wrote:
For her next point, the 54-year-old explained that grief was a lonely experience, as despite how many people showed up to comfort someone in the heat of the moment, they would all move on with their lives sooner or later, expecting the grieving person to navigate that path to recovery, alone.
Lisa Dedicated Her Final Instagram Posts To Her Son
As if backing her words, Lisa’s two last Instagram posts reflected on her late son’s demise and the resulting impact on her. In the first, from July 12, 2022, shared on the second anniversary of Benjamin’s death, the star posted a picture of her and her son’s legs, showing their matching tattoo, which she explained represented their eternal love and promise to remain connected eternally.
The next post, shared on August 30, featured an excerpt from her essay to People, urging those who needed it to read it, as it would be helpful. Having spent these final years mourning her son’s death and helping others navigate the grips of grief, the death of Lisa Marie Presley at 54 shocked the world. She left behind daughters Riley Keough and twin girls Finley and Harper Lockwood.
