Loki, the upcoming Disney+ series focusing on everyone’s favorite mischievous Asgardian, just added a big name to its cast. Deadline reports that Owen Wilson has just been cast in a major role. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on precisely what that major role is.
Filming is currently underway with an expected release of Spring 2021. The series will follow the God of Mischief after escaping with the tesseract during Avengers: Endgame. And as that version of Loki is from 2012, he won’t have gone through important character development. He’ll travel throughout history, messing with historical events in typical Loki fashion. That makes speculating on who Wilson could play very difficult.
While exact plot details are thin at the moment, Kevin Feige revealed last year that the series would connect to Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Given that Loki will be messing with history, this connection seems natural. WandaVision, another Disney+ series starring Vision and Scarlet Witch, will also tie into the Doctor Strange sequel. With the Disney+ shows connecting directly to the MCU, we could end up seeing Wilson in movies as well.
Owen Wilson has starred in Zoolander, Pixar’s Cars series, and almost every Wes Anderson movie. But he’s also one of the only actors we know of. Tom Hiddleston is naturally returning to the title role. And Sophia Di Martino (Yesterday) will co-star alongside him. However, there’s no word yet on her character either.
Loki is currently one of many Marvel shows in development for Disney+. Marvel plans to release The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision in 2020. After Loki in 2021, we’ll get What If…? an animated collection of one-off episodes exploring alternate worlds. Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, and She-Hulk are also in the works. However, Hawkeye was recently delayed indefinitely, and there are no release windows for the other three yet.
