Jeff Garlin has exited the ABC comedy series The Goldbergs. Garlin’s exit takes place after a human resources investigation related to several complaints about Garlin’s behavior on set. The Hollywood Reporter says that Garlin’s departure was a mutual agreement between the actor and Sony Pictures Television. The actor, who has played family patriarch Murray Goldberg since the show’s inception, has been under investigation due to claims of verbal and physical behavior that made staff members of the series uncomfortable. Earlier this month Garlin was interviewed by Vanity Fair and denied rumors that he had been fired from the show. He also said that he did not expect the show to continue beyond its current season.
The Goldbergs, which premiered in 2013 and is presently in its ninth season, is based on the life and family of series creator Adam F. Goldberg, who is played by Sean Giambrone in the series. The series has already suffered a major loss this year with the death of George Segal who played Goldberg’s maternal grandfather “Pops” in the series. Garlin is now the second departure from the series this year, and it is not yet clear how the series will handle his sudden departure.
Despite losing his role on The Goldbergs, Garlin will likely still stay busy. He still serves as an actor and executive producer on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, which recently entered its 11th season. He also has a role in the horror-comedy film STUDIO 666 alongside Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters. As of now, he has not been fired or asked to leave his roles on either of those projects.
