Yes, that’s right. Variety has reported that the Powers-That-Be on The Lord of the Rings has cast the ‘Lady of the Woods’ herself. The role, previously portrayed by Cate Blanchett in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies, is now being played by Morfyyd Clark.
As of now, the Welsh actress is perhaps best known for her recent role as Sister Clara in His Dark Materials, co-produced by the BBC and HBO. She is also set to play Mina Harker in a BBC adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 2020.
In Tolkien’s vast Lord of the Rings mythology, Galadriel was born in Valinor before the First Age had even started. During the Second Age, she establishes the realm of Eregion alongside fellow elf, Celeborn, which became the home of the Noldor elves. She later developed a new kingdom, Lothlórien, and eventually became an owner of one of the Three Rings of Power in an effort to keep these deadly weapons from Sauron.
While that is a (very) abridged version of Galadriel’s Second Age narrative, there is plenty of rich Lord of the Rings backstory for the writers to draw and expand from. No doubt, fans of Middle-Earth will be excited to see Galadriel’s younger years play out for when the series launches in 2021.
