Stargirl actor Luke Wilson and Schitt’s Creek star Annie Murphy have officially been selected to join the cast of Fingernails, an upcoming Apple Original Film. Wilson and Murphy will be joining Jessie Buckley, Riz Ahmed, and Jeremy Allen White in this romantic sci-fi film headed by director Christos Nikou.

Acquired by Apple during the Cannes Film Festival in May, Fingernails takes place in an alternate, futuristic world where scientists have devised a test that tells couples whether or not they’re truly in love, and as a result of this test, institutions have opened to help couples searching for “confirmation of their love”. Jessie Buckley will star as Anna, a young woman who begins working at one such institution – aptly named the Love Institute – as an assistant to Trevor (Riz Ahmed), who Deadline describes as “a mysterious and dedicated instructor.”

Luke Wilson will be joining the cast of Apple’s Fingernails as Amir, the head of the Love Institute who’s dedicated to helping couples confirm their love, with Annie Murphy acting as Amir’s currently unnamed love interest.

Who are Luke Wilson and Annie Murphy?

Luke Wilson, the youngest brother of fellow actors Owen and Andrew Wilson, has a long and storied acting career, with some of his most recent roles including two years as Pat Dugan in the CW’s Stargirl (2020) and Albuquerque in Zombieland: Double Tap (2019). Older roles include Bill Hanson in the Showtime comedy series Roadies (2016), Levi Callow in Enlightened (2011), and Casey Kelso in That ‘70s Show (2002).

Annie Murphy, in contrast with Wilson, has a somewhat shorter acting career, but it’s no less star-studded, with one of her most notable roles including flighty socialite Alexis Rose on the CBC sitcom Schitt’s Creek between 2015 and 2020. Some of Murphy’s additional roles include Allison Devine-McRoberts, the protagonist of AMC’s dark comedy series Kevin Can F*** Himself and Angela Kehoe in Rookie Blue.

Fingernails, an Apple Original Film, will be directed by Christos Nikou, whose debut film Apples premiered in Venice last year. Cate Blanchett, Coco Francini, and Andrew Upton will return from Apples to act as executive producers for the new film alongside Jerome Duboz and FilmNation Entertainment.

A release date for Fingernails has not been announced, but more details will likely become available as the film enters production.
