Everyone’s second favorite Christmas movie, Home Alone, is back. Sort of. At the age of 38, Macaulay Culkin has reprised his iconic role of Kevin McCallister in an advert for Google Assistant.
I wanted to be angry when watching this advert, I really, really did. The expected rage never materialized and I found myself smiling as scenes from the original Home Alone were recreated with the adult Kevin and a modern twist.
The ad is a stroke of genius and gives a modern day take on many of the classic moments from the original movie, brutalizing burglars aside. Kevin wakes up to find himself home alone, he asks his Google Assistant his calendar plans for the day. One event is listed entitled “house to yourself”.
Kevin spends the rest of the day recreating events from Home Alone with a modern twist, showing the uses of Google Assistant. He applies his aftershave and adds more to his shopping list. He jumps on the bed and sets a reminder to clean the sheets, he then hurts his back as he’s old now. I’m not going to go through the whole thing beat by beat, you can watch it below. I did enjoy it though, as the music and setting were both spot on. Nostalgia really is a powerful tool.
I wonder if they’ll do a second part of the advert showing Kevin kicking the living daylights out of the bad guys. Although, watching a fully grown man defending himself from burglars the way Kevin did as a child would definitely not be fun and would likely result in jail time for all the parties involved. I for one don’t want to see a sequel set in jail.
Have a watch of the advert for yourselves and get ready for a huge dose of nostalgia. After that, I’d recommend watching the original film, as well as the best Christmas movie of all time. We all know it’s Die Hard, no questions. Why not add in Gremlins to finish your watchlist, as it is Christmas after all. Happy holidays!
