According to a report from Variety, the Furiosa release is being delayed by one year. This Mad Max: Fury Road spinoff is now set to arrive in theaters on Memorial Day in 2024. However, it was originally scheduled to release nearly a year earlier on June 23rd, 2023.

Although details on the film are limited, Furiosa will likely explore the origins of Charlize Theron’s character from 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. However, because it is a prequel, the role of Furiosa has been recast. The brilliant Anya Taylor-Joy — who stars in the upcoming Last Night in Soho as well as the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit — will play the role instead. Joining Anya Taylor-Joy in the cast are Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

While delays are almost always disappointing, they are not uncommon, especially in the filmmaking industry. In fact, the film that inspired Furiosa suffered from several delays. However, the delays with Mad Max: Fury Road were largely due to the complex nature of shooting the movie. Ultimately though, the tedious process ended up paying off. Mad Max: Fury Road was a critical and monetary success for Warner Bros. The film even received ten Academy Award nominations for categories like Best Picture, Best Director, and more. It eventually went on to win six Academy Awards for its editing, production design, costume design, makeup and hairstyling, sound mixing, and sound editing.

Unfortunately, news of movie delays like the Furiosa release has become common lately. Hopefully, this will be the only delay for the Mad Max: Fury Road spinoff. But, if Furiosa is anything like its predecessor, it will more than likely be worth the long wait.
