The official account for Madden 21 promised a “first look” at the start of next month. Just what gamers will see is entirely unknown.

The latest installment in the long-running series was first officially confirmed during a Google Stadia event earlier this month. In the Stadia event, there wasn’t much revealed other than its coming and will also be coming to Google’s gaming platform. EA Sports put Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes front and center, making the announcement.

While Mahomes helped unveil Madden 21, he won’t be on the cover this year. The honor of gracing the box art falls to Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. Jackson and the Ravens spilled the beans on that little secret ahead of EA’s official announcement, though the company took it in stride.

Beyond the knowledge that Madden 21 is coming and featuring Jackson, nothing else has even been leaked about the game. It should come as no surprise that fans and followers of the official account were less excited and more anxious to learn about the latest installment.

So much more than a name…

Despite continuing to be one of the biggest franchises in sports gaming, the series hasn’t exactly pleased gamers lately. Only slight changes to the graphics and gameplay disappoint year in and year out. Our own review of Madden 20 found the game severely lacking.

There is hope Madden 21 could be a way to jumpstart the series. This year’s title will be the first to land on the Xbox Series X and the PS5. Excitement about games on the next generation of consoles always pop up this time of year. The hopes and excitement usually fall flat before the official launch.

There’s also a real question about just how much we’ll actually see on June 1. EA tends to release info for this series in dribs and drabs. The “first look” will almost certainly be a new trailer and little else.

Madden 21 is coming to the Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5, and Google Stadia this fall.
