The 10th-anniversary online event for Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime revealed that the franchise is getting a new film that will serve as a sequel to the 2013 film Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie Part 3: Rebellion. The title for the film is Gekijoban Maho Shojo Madoka Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten, which translates to “Turning the Tide of Walpurgis.”

What We Know So Far

“Now let’s continue the story” is the official tagline on the official poster announcement. Madoka Kaname, the franchise’s main character, is also reaching her hand out to an unknown character while wearing her magical girl outfit.  A relatively short teaser was also shown for this film, which features the show’s iconic art style and what looks like to be the uniform of fan-favorite character Kyoko.

The film will also see the return of the original staff from the series, including the original creators Magica Quartet, composer Yuki Kajiura (who is responsible for an amazing soundtrack), and will be animated by the studio Shaft.

Which Cast Members Are Returning? (Spoiler Alert)

During the event, the returning cast members also made an appearance in support of the upcoming film. While the movie’s plot is still widely unknown, many fans can start to think about the plot of the movie since all of the cast [Spoiler: who died in the original series] will be making a return.

This returning cast includes (but not limited to):

  • Chiwa Saito- Homura Akemi
  • Kaori Mizuhashi as Mami Tomoe
  • Eri Kitamura – Sayaka Miki

Madoka Magica iOS Game Also Announced

The Madoka Magica event also announced a new iOS game that “will debut a new, original story.”  The game trailer is restricted to only Japan on Youtube. This will be fixed when Anime News Network gets the rights to post the trailer on their official channel.

 

Finally, a purchasable soundtrack disc for the entire franchise will be available worldwide on Monday for Spotify and Apple Music. A Tokyo exhibition showcasing the costumes, props, and models of the characters will also be constructed in September.

What is Puella Magi Madoka Magica?

The twelve-episode series tells the story of Madoka Kaname. She runs into trouble when she encounters a witch and is offered the chance to become a magical girl by a mysterious being. She then learns that there is more to the world of magical girls and witches than meets the eye. Currently, the series and all three movies are available to stream on Netflix,  Crunchyroll, HBO MAX, and Funimation.
