It’s time to start cleaning out those attics, Nevada resident Scott Amos did that and found an unopened rare Nintendo game that could net him and his family around $10,000. The Boxed Kid Icarus cartridge was found in an old JC Penny bag with the original receipt for $38.45.
Amos told the Reno Gazette Journal that he only expected to get maybe a couple of hundred dollars for the rare find. Imagine his surprise when he talked to Valerie McLeckie, the video game consignment director of Heritage Auctions, and found out that there are less than 10 unopened copies of the game and it’s considered an easter egg when it comes to certain collectors circles. As it turns out those certain collectors are willing to pay out big bucks for a chance to get there hands on an unopened copy of the game.
Learning of this incredible, once in a lifetime find, Mr. Amos called up Wata Games, a video game grading service, and sent them the game, which they graded an 8 on a 10 point scale. Amos stated that no one in his family ever recalls buying the game, which judging by the receipt could have been a 1988 Christmas purchase. Scott is able to recall playing it with a friend and enjoying it, in spite of its difficulty, but was able to come to the conclusion that his mother bought the copy and hid it in the attic and simply forgot to get it out in time for the 1988 Christmas season.
If the auction goes as planned and the Amos family is able to get the high price of $10k, he stated that he has an older sister and is going to be splitting the profits down the middle with her, and will take a family trip to Disney Land.
