MapleStory 2 will be closing globally on May 27. The free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game was released in July of 2015 in Korea, September of 2017 in China, and only came out in October 2018 for the rest of the world.

In the announcement post on the game’s website, the MapleStory 2 team explains they tried to rework the game. They concluded that they would not be able to provide the level of service fans have come to expect, however. “We took a hard look at the current state of the game and its future roadmap, and sadly reached the conclusion that it would be difficult to maintain the long-term continuation of the game while remaining true to what made MapleStory 2 your MapleStory 2,” the post explains.

The team has disabled Microtransactions for MapleStory 2 as of the announcement. Purchases made through the publisher’s website or the Nexon Launcher since Dec. 11, 2019, are eligible for a refund. Any purchases made through Steam will have to be within Steam’s refund policy to be eligible.

May 27 will also bring the closure of the MapleStory 2 website, forums, and Discord.

A proper sendoff for MapleStory 2

The developers do have a number of community events planned for those sticking around for the game’s final months. Alongside those events, a number of activities that have had limits on them have opened up. For example, the daily and weekly restrictions for dungeon raids have been removed. The team also added quality of life updates, such as dismantling multiple pieces of gear with one click. All of these updates and events can be found here.

While it’s sad to see a beloved game come to a close, it’s become almost inevitable with games that require a large online presence. It’s nice to see the developers doing everything they can to give MapleStory 2 a proper sendoff.
