Rumors have been swirling about Nintendo’s unannounced Mario Kart 9. Earlier this month, it was reported that the game was in “active development” and would include a “twist.” Now, there is speculation that the next installment to the Mario Kart franchise could include popular characters such as Pikmin and Star Fox and some other familiar faces. Could this be the “twist” that was previously rumored?

Reports say Mario Kart 9 will be a crossover title similar to Super Smash Bros. Mario Kart 9 will reportedly feature various characters from several different Nintendo titles. Nintendo leaker, Zippo, has revealed “three franchises that will be joining Mario and his friends on the circuits this go-round: Those being Arms, Pikmin, and Star Fox. Alternate costumes will also be featured in some way, as well as expanded single-player content, of some kind.”

Zippo also believes the release of Mario Kart 9 will be “one of Nintendo’s biggest titles ever, period.” The game’s release will help the company celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary, which is this year. The leaker also predicts Nintendo will release the racing game before the end of the next fiscal year. If this rumor comes to fruition, that would be incredibly exciting for Mario Kart fans everywhere.

While this is merely a rumor and should be treated as such, Zippo has been right about past Nintendo leaks. Additionally, more than one source has claimed that Mario Kart 9 will be a crossover with new characters. One thing they can’t seem to agree on is the upcoming game’s name. While some believe the title will be Mario Kart 9, others claim the game’s name will be Mario Kart 10 or Mario Kart Crossroads.

While nothing is certain until Nintendo officially announces its next Mario Kart game, fans can rest assured that there will be another installment at some point. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to be incredibly popular and is the best-selling game in the franchise. It’s just a question of when for the next Mario Kart game release.
