This week’s Japanese sales chart from Media Create shows one of those unusual situations where the best selling game of the week does not match the best selling console. Nintendo Switch’s Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle was the most relevant release of the week, and as such it took the top spot in the software list. Yes, we are talking about the same Mario + Rabbids game that was released in North America and Europe back in September, but Nintendo (the publisher of the game in Japan) decided to move its release date to a quieter month like January. Overall the game has sold well, although its numbers are far from other proper Nintendo games featuring characters from the Super Mario franchise.

Other game releases this week include Gintama Ranbu for PS4 and PSVita, and Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, which failed to attract a large number of new fans to the game, as it happened this week in the United Kingdom. Finally, the last new entrance in the software list is a re-issue of Valkyria Chronicles Remastered at a lower price, which precedes the release of Valkyria Chronicles 4 in March, featuring a special mission with the characters of the original game.

On the hardware list, the excitement of the upcoming release of Monster Hunter: World is making PS4’s sales grow even in the weeks preceding, which just shows how much of an event is a new launch of the series in the country. Nintendo Switch also gets more sales than last week, although the new shipment was not enough to top the charts. Earlier this week we analyzed the chances of Nintendo Switch to pass PS4’s lifetime sales this year, and this week’s result just goes to show that it’s going to be a harder feat than many expected.
