In an unexpected turn of events, Square Enix has announced that Marvel’s Avengers will be playable at Gamescom. This will be the first time the game will be playable by the general public, as it has been reserved to the press and mostly in a hands-off fashion at E3 2019 and later events.

“Visitors can dive in and enjoy playable demos for Marvel’s Avengers and Final Fantasy VII Remake, the critically acclaimed Final Fantasy XIV Online, Trials of Mana, as well as a playable demo for Kingdom Hearts III as seen in the release of the game earlier this year,” the publisher has shared in a press release.

The demo will be the same which we have been watching over the last few months, as “gamers at the Square Enix booth will battle as Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor experiencing the preliminary incident of this original Avengers story.”

As I said, this is entirely unexpected, since Crystal Dynamics has been somewhat cagey about the game, and it got even more after the E3 2019 expedition was welcomed with some disappointment among Marvel and Marvel Cinematic Universe fans.

However, we had already been told that the demo would have been made public, with a gameplay trailer, the week after the Gamescom, so it does make sense that it is playable at the fair in Koln, Germany. Gamescom is opening on August 21 through August 24, and a live show with many guests, including Hideo Kojima, will air on August 19.
