Square Enix just shared an outline of its most recent financial results briefing, showing how well the company did for Q1 through Q3 of the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2022. Though the company saw its net sales for its MMO sub-segment rise from the previous year, Square’s HD Games sub-segment had lower net sales than the previous year.

One reason for the lower HD Games sales is because Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy game “undershot.” Developed by Eidos-Montréal and published by Square Enix, Guardians was received generally well in the critical space. Critics and fans praised the game’s fun gameplay, and it is considered an improvement over Square’s other Marvel game, Avengers.

Despite strong word of mouth, however, the outline states that the Guardians of the Galaxy did not meet Square’s sales expectations. The bright side with Guardians, though, is that the game saw an increase in sales around Nov. 2021 when Square Enix kicked off new “sales initiatives,” as read in the outline. But since overall net sales for HD games were down the previous year, it is unknown if Guardians of the Galaxy was able to catch up to Square’s expectations.

It should be noted that the previous fiscal year saw the release of huge titles like the Final Fantasy VII Remake and Marvel’s Avengers, which could explain why this most recent fiscal quarter couldn’t match the net sales of the previous year.
