The mutants that lost out on their chance to join the X-Men in the first-ever reader-voted team are getting their very own costumes. Marvel has teased the suits that the rejected X-Men will be wearing as they come together for a mission. The new costumes will be seen in the upcoming one-shot Secret X-Men. Preview pages for the comic, released by Newsarama, offer a peek at the retro-inspired navy and yellow outfits. The team will wear the suits as they work in the shadows to stave off unknown galactic threats.
Who Are The Secret X-Men?
This new team is comprised of mutants Sunspot, Banshee, Tempo, Forge, Marrow, Armor, Cannonball, Strong Guy, and Boom-Boom. Each of whom is linked by the fact that they lost out on the chance to join the official X-Men team to Polaris. According to the comic’s official synopsis: “Team co-captains Sunspot and Cannonball will lead Marrow, Tempo, Forge, Banshee, Strong Guy, Armor, and Boom-Boom on a dangerous mission to save a figure of paramount importance…the daughter of Professor X and empress of the Shi’ar: Xandra!”
Of course, this is not the first time that Marvel has introduced a “secret” team to work in the shadows. A similar version of the Avengers has been covertly saving the world for more than a decade.
Shi’ar Sounds Familiar…
While Xandra is a fairly recent addition to the X-Men universe, the Shi’ar are not. The galactic race has played a pivotal role in many comic arcs since the seventies. Most notably, they were at the center of the popular “Dark Phoenix Saga.” They have also popped up in several other important storylines in the Marvel universe.
Tini Howard, who worked on the Excalibur and X of Swords series, will be writing the series alongside Daredevil artist Francesco Mobili. Secret X-Men #1 hits shelves on February 9.
