Ahead of its May 14 release date, news has come out that will please Mass Effect fans, as Bioware announced that the Mass Effect Legendary Edition compilation has gone gold. The news was announced on Twitter by the project director on the game, Mac Walters, combined with a suitably appropriate video of female Shepard having a boogie with Garrus.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition has gone GOLD! It’s been quite a journey – time to celebrate briefly. Maybe even dance a little… if that’s you’re thing. #MassEffect #Legendary pic.twitter.com/cvDmGjFrSi

Going gold means that development on the game is done, and the rest of the time before the game releases will be devoted to finding and fixing any bugs (which will likely result in a day one patch).

It’s been a harrowing time recently for Mass Effect fans. Mass Effect Andromeda was largely disappointing, judging by the standards set by the rest of the series – the amount of videos devoted to showing the woeful state of the game on release is a testament to this – and ended up being the death knell for Bioware Montreal, as it was converted into a support studio shortly after Andromeda’s legacy as the black sheep in the series was confirmed.

The move (announced in November last year) to remaster the original Shepard trilogy, which this Legendary Edition contains, as well as all of the DLC released for those games, was a move that was welcomed by the community as a return to the glory days of the series. There is supposed to be a new game in the series coming at some point, but following Mass Effect Andromeda‘s disaster release, and as Bioware’s current focus is on an upcoming Dragon Age game, news on that game has gone quiet, save for a trailer.

The original Mass Effect trilogy is one of the most beloved series of games from the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 generation, and updating the graphics and mechanics is a great way to get a sci-fi classic into the hands of new players.
