Matrix actors Hugo Weaving and Jessica Henwick are two stars from the huge sci-fi franchise who have actually never shared the screen together. That all changes now as these two Matrix stars join Inventing Anna’s Julia Garner in Australian director Kitty Green’s social thriller, The Royal Hotel.

The Royal Hotel is an Australian-set film coming from the production company See-Saw Films, which was also responsible for this year’s Oscar-winning director Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog. Kitty Green co-wrote The Royal Hotel script alongside Oscar Redding. This film also brings Netflix’s Ozark and Inventing Anna star Julia Garner back together with director Kitty Green. The two collaborated on Kitty Green’s 2019 breakout hit, The Assistant. Shooting for The Royal Hotel is set to begin in Australia this summer.

The Story of The Royal Hotel

Based on a true story, the plot of The Royal Hotel follows two women, Hannah (Julia Garner) and her best friend Liv (Jessica Henwick) as they go backpacking in Australia. After running out of money, Liv convinces Hannah to take a temporary live-in job at a pub located within a remote mining town in the Australian Outback. As Liv seeks adventure, they take their job behind the bar at a pub called “The Royal Hotel.”

The bar owner, Billy (Hugo Weaving), alongside some locals, introduces the girls to the drinking culture in Australia. Things are going fine until Billy and the locals’ behavior crosses the line, and Liv and Hannah “find themselves trapped in an unnerving situation that grows rapidly out of their control.”
