MediaTek continues to expand its 5G chipset lineup with the launch of new Dimensity chipsets. The chipmaker has announced the Dimensity 800U chipset today and it can essentially be seen as a younger sibling to the Dimensity 800 from earlier this year. It is the company’s sixth Dimensity-branded chipset and will help bring 5G connectivity to more mid-range phones in the coming months.

The Dimensity 800U is an octa-core chipset fabricated using the 7nm TSMC FinFET process. It includes two ARM Cortex-A76 cores clocked up to 2.4GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores clocked up to 2.0GHz. It’s coupled with the ARM Mali-G57 MC3 GPU, which is also found aboard the Dimensity 800 and 720.

Dimensity 800U vs Dimensity 800

There’s only a minor difference between the MediaTek Dimensity 800 and 800U. The former includes 2x Cortex-A76 cores at up to 2.4GHz and 6x Cortex-A55 cores at up to 2.0GHz while the latter includes 4x Cortex-A76 cores at up to 2.6GHz and 4x Cortex-A55 cores at up to 2.0GHz. The GPU clock speed will vary but it’s essentially the same.
