After working as an actor for around forty years, Meg Ryan is stepping behind the camera to direct an adaptation of the novel A Lady’s Guide to Selling Out. According to a report from Deadline, the movie is being made specifically for Netflix. It will be the second feature directed by Meg Ryan after Ithaca’s 2015 drama.

A Lady’s Guide to Selling Out is a hit novel by author Sally Franson. The story follows Casey Pendergast, a people pleaser who is desperately navigating a 21st-century career while trying to figure out just who she wants to be. The publishers of the novel have described it as being in the same vein as The Devil Wears Prada and the TV show Mad Men.

When it comes to the question of genre, Franson’s book fits well within the realm of a romantic comedy. This is because the story also centers on the lead character, Casey, falling in love with one of the authors at her ad agency. This love challenges her worldview, forcing her to consider if she may be the sellout her best friend claims she is.

The Rom-Com Queen

Although she has been out of the limelight for a few years, Meg Ryan has starred in dozens of films. She is best known for her work in romantic comedies, including When Harry Met Sally, You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle. She previously directed and starred in the 2015 drama film Ithaca. Netflix’s A Lady’s Guide to Selling Out will mark Meg Ryan’s return to directing.
