Giving Snake another facelift to mark the 20th anniversary of the release.

Believe it or not it’s been 20 years since Metal Gear Solid launched in Japan on the PlayStation. To mark the occasion, artist, Erasmus Brosdau, has redone the entire intro sequence in the Unreal Engine. In 4K. With UHD.

If you’re a fan of the game, the moment you hear the intro music your spine starts to tingle and indeed, simply the idea of a modern remake of the seminal title sets your heart a flutter. Konami did, in fact, release a more modern remake in the form of Twin Snakes on the Gamecube, but that was back in 2004.

Hideo Kojima’s tactical espionage action game was not only brilliantly received, earning perfect scores left, right and center, it was also instrumental in popularizing the entire stealth genre. Widely regarded as one of the greatest and most important video games of all time, if you haven’t checked it out, the entire series is pretty phenomenal. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain was the most recent of the core series, released in 2015 for the PS4 to wide acclaim.

Since Kojima’s slightly messy departure from Konami, the future of the series is uncertain with the most recent release, Metal Gear Survive, earning negative reviews across the board.

While it’s easy to remember the past in 4K, the truth is it certainly wasn’t, and so here’s the original intro in all its low res glory. And just for fun, the Twin Snakes version beneath.
