Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is finally here after years of waiting and has released on numerous platforms. As with many multiplatform games, one of the big questions is which version plays the best, and with the game releasing today, reports on just how well the consoles versions play have been revealed.

Digital Foundry is one of the best in the industry at reviewing performance and they have now taken on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.  On the console side, this game releases today for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox One.

The frame rate on current-gen console is rather impressive it sounds like with a “near-unshakeable 60fps” for both PS4 and Xbox One. Reports were that in very few instances, the PS4 saw a frame rate lock to 30 fps, while the Xbox One locked to around 50fps. In comparison, the PS3 and Xbox 360 have some major frame rate issues it sounds like, with frequent drops throughout the game.

The Xbox One does not utilize subsurface scattering, which allows for more natural blending of shadows and lightning, but this does help to enhance the PS4 in a small way. The much bigger deal between the PS4 and Xbox One deals with the resolution of the game.

The PS4 version of Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain is a perfect 1080p picture, while the Xbox One instead upscales from 1600×900. This lower resolution isn’t a dealbreaker, but does set the two versions apart.

With factors like the resolution and inclusion of subsurface scattering, those who own both current-gen systems will likely lean towards the slightly better PS4 version. Regardless, it sounds like you really can’t go wrong with either the PS4 or Xbox One versions, but stay away from last-gen releases if at all possible.
