The Idea Of You takes its inspiration from a 2017 novel of the same name by Robinne Lee. The novel features 39-year-old divorced mother Solène Marchand as, in an effort to bond with her teenage daughter Isabelle, she takes her daughter to Coachella, where she meets Hayes Campbell, the frontman of Isabelle’s favorite boyband and all-around heartthrob. Solène and Hayes are quickly involved in an unexpected and risky relationship that the official book synopsis describes as “a series of clandestine trysts [that] quickly evolves into a passionate and genuine relationship.”

Of course, the relationship isn’t without its complications, from the age gap between the two – Hayes is in his mid-twenties – Solène’s daughter, and Hayes’ fame. When their relationship is unwittingly spilled to the press and Solène and Isabelle become paparazzi targets, Solène is forced to take a step back and examine how the choices she’s made affect not only her life but the lives of everyone around her.
