Michelle Buteau will star in the Netflix series Survival of the Thickest. It’s based on a book of her essays of the same name. The book was published on February 1 of 2020. Buteau already hosts the Netflix reality series The Circle and was in a supporting role for the film Always Be My Maybe. The stand-up comedian created the series Survival of the Thickest with Danielle Sanchez-Witzel. Witzel is the showrunner of NBC’s The Carmichael Show and co-executive produced the series New Girl. Netflix greenlit an eight-episode order. A24 is producing the Netflix series. It revolves around the newly single Mavis Beaumont, played by Michelle Buteau. Mavis picks herself up after her breakup and focuses on her chosen family and feeling good in her own skin.
Michelle Buteau: From Stand-up Comedy to Television Star
Michelle Buteau is not new to the entertainment business. She started her career in 2001 and landed her first Comedy Central television role in the early 2000s. She had roles in Whitney, Key and Peele, 2 Dope Queens, and Russian Doll. Buteau started hosting the comedy podcast Late Night Whenever! in 2018. She landed a slot in Netflix’s The Comedy Lineup. She has had supporting roles in the films Isn’t It Romantic, Someone Great, and the upcoming Jennifer Lopez film Marry Me. Michelle Buteau did have a starring role in the BET+ series First Wives Club, based on the 1996 film with the same name. Esquire listed her as one of ten comedians to watch in 2017. Buteau’s efforts have not been ignored by Netflix with her new leading role in Survival of the Thickest.
She will lend her voice for the docuseries The Principles of Pleasure. The docuseries covers joy and modern science, celebrates the complex world of women’s pleasure, and puts old-fashioned myths to rest.
