Microsoft’s Project Scorpio isn’t on the market and doesn’t even have an official name, but it seems like the company is already looking at what will come next. This is according to an interview between Gamasutra and Xbox head Phil Spencer, where they also take a look at the final dev kit for the upcoming console.
In the interview, Spencer explains that while Scorpio represents a big shift in the console market, Xbox is still invested in the space. “I’m a strong believer in console. And what that appliance means in my family room, under my TV,” said Spencer.
He then went on to explain just how devoted Microsoft is to consoles, saying that they are already looking ahead at what comes next. “I’ve said, and this is actually true, the planning for what happens after Scorpio in the console space is already underway. You have to think about it that way. Like, what is the next thing? We — I — are committed to the console space. We think it’s critically important.”
Some might try to take this as a bad thing, like that Xbox is shipping off a console and immediately looking at a replacement. That’s not the point though. Spencer is explaining Microsoft’s process, and how this industry works. Technology moves fast, and if you aren’t looking a few years ahead then you’re probably falling behind already. It also shows their dedication to consoles, which has been in question as they push more toward PC gaming.
Project Scorpio is a huge leap in power for the Xbox One family, but it also represents a big change in how we even look at consoles. They are no longer set devices that don’t change until a new generation begins. PS4 Pro and Project Scorpio have changed that to where there are now iterative steps in between, with no set generational leap. Whether that works or not is yet to be seen, but it seems like Xbox will be there with whatever comes next.
