Earlier this week it was rumored that Microsoft may be transitioning away from the Microsoft Points currency that has been used by the Xbox Live Marketplace since its inception. However, it appears that this is not the case, and the points structure will remain in place on the Xbox 360 for the time being.
A Microsoft spokesperson recently confirmed that the company will continue using the system:
“Microsoft Points continue to be the currency for puchasing content for the Xbox 360 console,” said a Microsoft Rep. However, it appears that on the Windows 8 platform, Microsoft will not be using the points system, and will instead allow local currency transactions.
The Verge suggests that Microsoft may be in the stages of phasing out the Microsoft points system, and if that is the case, the next generation Xbox 720 could mark the end of this confusing scenario where digital products must be purchased by different means within the Microsoft hardware and software ecosystem.
