Mike Flanagan and the team behind Midnight Mass are bringing The Fall of the House of Usher to Netflix. While this title is a story by Edgar Allen Poe, the series is reported to be based on multiple works from the gothic horror writer, according to Deadline. First published in 1893, the story features themes of “madness, family, isolation and metaphysical identities.”
The upcoming series is created by Flanagan and is going to be directed by Fimognari and Flanagan. The Fall of the House of Usher will be eight parts with each director taking on four episodes each. Flanagan is also executive producing the project alongside his Intrepid Pictures partner Trevor Macy. Melinda Nishioka, Michael Fimognari, and Emmy Grinwis will also be co-executive producers.
Flanagan has become one of the kings of modern horror and has already worked on several projects for Netflix. The Haunting of Hill House in 2018 was immensely successful for Netflix and was adapted from a novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson. In 2020, Flanagan also made The Haunting of Bly Manor, based on The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. He has also directed two movies for Netflix, Hush and Gerald’s Game. His most recent series, Midnight Mass, is an entirely original work and is a deep dive into themes of religion, faith, and isolation. Midnight Mass has been successful already for Netflix and received great praise from critics and audiences alike. Flanagan is also adapting a movie adaptation of The Midnight Club by Christopher Pike for Netflix.
Outside of Netflix, Flanagan has directed many well-received horror movies including Oculus, Ouija: Origin of Evil, and Doctor Sleep. The Fall of the House of Usher has no release date yet, but since The Midnight Club isn’t coming until 2022, there is probably going to be a bit of a wait before Flanagan’s next series is released.
