One of the most endearing aspects of Minecraft is the variety of animals that you can keep as farm animals or pets. From being able to tame wolves to making large cow and pig farms, these features allow us to adventure alongside our favorite animals. The recent Caves & Cliffs update for Minecraft added even more animals to the wide array already available, including axolotls, a newfound favorite for many players. By the end of this guide, you will learn where axolotls spawn and how to breed them in Minecraft.

How to Breed Axolotls in Minecraft

Currently, axolotls are found underground, below sea level, or y-coordinate 63. They can spawn in any water source and will appear as one of four colors. These colors include pink, brown, gold, and cyan. When breeding, there is a very rare chance that the baby axolotl will be blue!

Since axolotls are passive mobs, they will not attack you when you approach them. You can use a water bucket to pick up the axolotl, and either carry it in your inventory or place it in a water source. While axolotls spawn underground, you are free to move them above ground into a nearby lake, pond, or ocean. Alternatively, you can use a lead on the axolotl to walk it home. However, like a fish, it will not survive forever outside of water. You will need to relocate the axolotl into a nearby water source to keep it alive.

Once you find the perfect place to relocate your newly found axolotls, you can use buckets of tropical fish to breed them. You will need at least two adult axolotls to breed. If successful, red hearts will appear above the heads of the axolotls after giving them the fish, and they will spawn a new baby axolotl. The baby will either be the same color as one of the parents or in very rare instances, appear blue.
