Minecraft has several mobs that you can ride on using a saddle. Horses, donkeys, striders, pigs, and even skeleton horses can be equipped with saddles so you can travel around your world quicker. By the end of this guide, you will learn how to get a saddle in Minecraft.

How to Get a Saddle in Minecraft

Unfortunately, you cannot craft a saddle in Minecraft. While craftable horse saddles briefly existed in Java Edition in 2013, regular saddles that you see today do not currently have a crafting recipe. Despite not being able to craft saddles, there are still multiple methods of obtaining one. Once you have obtained a saddle, you can equip it on horses, donkeys, striders, pigs, and skeleton horses.

The first method is by finding chest loot. Depending on the structure you visit, you have anywhere between a 2-35% chance of finding a saddle in treasure chests. The following naturally-generated structures have a chance at spawning a saddle in Java and Bedrock Edition:

  • Monster spawning dungeons
  • Bastion Remnant Hoglin chests
  • Desert temple chests
  • End city chests
  • Jungle Temple chests
  • Nether fortress hallway chests
  • Stronghold Altar chests
  • Village chests – Weaponsmith villager chests, tanner villager chests, and Savanna home chests

The second method of getting a saddle is from fishing. However, saddles are considered a treasure drop from fishing, making them rare. If you have Luck of the Sea III on your fishing rod, you have nearly a two percent chance of catching a saddle every time you successfully reel in an item. If you do not have the Luck of the Sea enchantment on your fishing rod, your chances drop down to less than one percent.

The third method is by trading with a master-level leatherworker villager. Depending on whether you are playing on Java or Bedrock Edition, your chance of finding a saddle through this method will differ. If you play Minecraft Java Edition, you can trade a master-level leatherworker villager six emeralds for a saddle. If you play Minecraft Bedrock Edition, there is only a 50% chance the villager will offer this trade.

The final method is by hunting ravagers during village raids. When a raid starts in a village, ravagers will appear during the third wave. A ravager will always drop a saddle upon death, which you can pick up and use. However, it has 100 health points or 50 hearts of health, making it as difficult to kill as an iron golem.
