Creating a farm or keeping pets in your house is one of many activities you may try to accomplish in Minecraft. With leads being a feature in the game, you can walk your pet wolf, cat, llama or pig where ever you would like. If you are playing Minecraft Education Edition, you may also be looking to create colorful balloons to place around your world. While you can obtain leads through chest and mob loot, you can also craft them if you do not have the best luck with finding any. By the end of this guide, you will learn how to make a lead in Minecraft Bedrock and Java Editions.

How to Make a Lead in Minecraft

To make leads in Minecraft Bedrock and Java Editions, you must craft them using a crafting table. The items will not fit in your 2×2 inventory crafting space. To craft a lead, you need four strings and one slime ball. You can use leads to leash passive animals and certain monsters. With the lead, you can either tie it around a fence post to keep the animal nearby or hold the lead to have the animal follow you. If you are playing Minecraft Education Edition, you can also use leads with latex, dye and helium to craft balloons.

There are multiple ways to obtain string and slime balls. To find the string, you can defeat spiders, break cobwebs, barter with piglins, or loot treasure chests. Dungeons, jungle temples and desert pyramid chests all have a chance of spawning string in them. Slime balls are dropped by slimes when defeated. Additionally, slime balls are dropped by sneezing pandas.

If you do not want to craft a lead, you can also find them in Woodland mansion chests in Java and Bedrock Editions. You may also find some leads in buried treasure chests while playing Bedrock Edition. Buried treasure chests usually spawn in beaches, and you can use explorer maps to find them.
