As exploration is a crucial element of Minecraft gameplay, maps are essential when traversing the massive game world. While players can randomly discover treasure maps in shipwrecks or purchase explorer maps from Cartographers, maps in Minecraft can also be crafted by hand. A standard map displays 128×128 blocks, each block represented by one pixel. However, maps can be enlarged to illustrate 2048×2048 blocks of the surrounding area. To do this, players must have access to a Cartography Table, a utility block found in Villages, or made using a Crafting Table. Read on to learn the recipe for making a map in Minecraft.

How to Make a Map in Minecraft

The Minecraft recipe for making an Empty Map is Compass x 1 and Paper x 8. To craft paper, players need to use Sugar Canes x 3 to produce three sheets of paper. The compass is craftable using Iron Ingots x 4 and Redstone Dust x 1.

Sugar Cane can be found in Minecraft‘s Overworld, particularly close to water. Swamp and Desert biomes have a much higher chance of spawning Sugar Cane. Iron Ingots are smelted from Iron Ore, a common metal found in caverns and mines. Redstone is a slightly more rare resource but can easily be found underground.

Holding and using an Empty Map in Minecraft will cause it to be filled out and show the live location of the player within the vicinity. However, it can become tedious to generate maps for every 128×128 area of blocks. Players can use a Cartography Table to “zoom-out” a map and make it show more of the surrounding area. To do this, players can use their filled-out map with Paper x 1 on the table. Players can find the recipe for the Cartography Table below.

Minecraft is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox One X|S, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS.
