Whether you are holding a celebration with a Candle-lit birthday Cake or adding some atmospheric lighting to your Halloween decor in Minecraft, Candles can be a perfect light source block for the occasion. Introduced in Update 1.17, Candles can be used as decoration or a light source with varying illumination depending on the number of Candles lit per tile. For instance, a single candle produces a light level of 3, while four can be placed within a single tile to emit a light level of 12. As noted above, you can also put a Candle atop a Cake in Minecraft to make a “birthday Cake.”

Crafting Candles in Minecraft

Only two resources are required to make Candles in Minecraft: String and Honeycomb. String is primarily acquired from Spiders and their Cobwebs, found in caves and underground mineshafts. Honeycomb is harvested from Bee Nests or synthetic Beehives crafted by a player. Bee Nests have a 100% chance of spawning in Meadows, but the percentages are dramatically decreased for other biomes.

How to Craft (& Use) a Lectern in Minecraft wiki

If you are looking to mass-produce Candles in Minecraft, having a renewable source of String and Honeycomb will make production much more manageable. For instance, locating a Cave Spider Spawner and building several Beehives near Flower-filled areas will ensure that you can craft as many Candles as you want. By default, Candles come in a tannish-white, waxy-looking color. However, you can combine a Candle with a Dye to produce a colored Candle. According to YouTuber JayDeeMC, Candles can be dyed into any shade as long there is an available Dye for the desired color.

To light a Candle in Minecraft, you will need Flint and Steel, the same tool used for activating Nether Portals. This tool is made with an Iron Ingot and Flint, a rare drop from Gravel. Fire Charges and Flame Arrows can also be used to ignite Candles, but such an approach is less ideal for the resources spent. You can put out Candles by touching them with your hand. Do not worry; extinguishing the flame of a Candle will not cause damage to the player character.

Minecraft is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox One X|S, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS.
