There are numerous ways to strengthen yourself in Minecraft. While many players use potions and food, others opt to use the best enchantments on their gear. Among the many enchantments available in the game, Respiration is incredibly useful if you spend a lot of time underwater. This guide will teach you about the Respiration enchantment and what it does in Minecraft Java and Bedrock Editions.

What Does Respiration Do in Minecraft?

Respiration is an enchantment in Minecraft that helps you breathe underwater longer. Typically, you can’t stay underwater much longer than around 15 seconds before you take damage and drown to death. With the Respiration enchantment, your breathing time increases by an additional 15 seconds, decreasing your chances of drowning. Without using commands or cheats, it’s possible to get up to Respiration III on your helmet, raising your breathing time from 15 seconds to 60. This time is boosted further if you use a turtle shell as a helmet.

Similar to regular enchantments, you can obtain Respiration using an enchanting table. While lower levels will typically reward you with Respiration I, Level 30 has nearly a 27% chance of giving Respiration III and only a 2% chance of providing Respiration I. If you want to conserve your XP levels and only want Respiration I, aim for around Level 10-15, as this is the range where you have the highest chance of getting the lowest level enchantment.

In Minecraft Java and Bedrock Editions, the main drawback of the Respiration enchantment is that you cannot obtain it on any tool or armor piece except your helmet. While it is possible to use commands to add Respiration to other armor pieces, you cannot achieve this through natural enchanting. Instead, you’ll have to stick to enchanting just your helmet. Despite this limit, you can enchant any equipment with a Respiration book using an anvil, including armor pieces that are not helmets.
