Diamonds are one of the most valuable resources in Minecraft. They are used to craft everything from enchanting tables to some of the best tools and armor. It is important to know where to locate these diamonds and how to obtain them. Here is where you can find Diamonds in Minecraft.

Where to Find Diamonds

Diamond Ore is located deep down in the depths of the map. The ore generates between vertical coordinate levels y:16 and y:-64. The Diamond generation basically exists as a triangle, meaning there is little chance of diamond spawning up near y:16 and a large chance of Diamonds spawning the closer you get to y:-64. For this reason, we suggest looking for diamonds in the range of y:-54 and y:-64.

If you are playing on Minecraft version 1.17 or earlier, your diamond hunting will be slightly different. On those versions of the game, Diamonds spawn between vertical coordinate levels y:5 and y:16. Levels y:11 and y:12 are often considered the best place to look for diamonds in these versions because lava forms between levels y:5 and y:10.

How to Mine Diamonds

The first thing you need to know before heading down into the deep recesses of your Minecraft map is how to mine Diamond Ore. To mine Diamonds, players will need an Iron Pickaxe. Follow the steps below to create an Iron Pickaxe.

  • Find Iron Ore - Iron is pretty common and can be found in any cave or by simply digging into the ground.Smelt the Iron Ore - Before you can use the Iron you just mined, it needs to be smelted. Simply put Iron Ore into a Furnace and some fuel such as Coal, Charcoal, or Wood. The result is an Iron Ingot.Craft the Iron Pickaxe - Once you have smelted some Iron Ore, take three Iron Ingots as well as two Sticks and place them into a crafting table in the shape of a pickaxe. The output will then be an Iron Pickaxe.

Best ways to find Diamonds

Now that we know where Diamonds spawn and how to mine them, it helps to know the most effective ways to find these diamonds. One way to search for Diamonds is to first search for caves. Caves will often lead you down into Diamond territory, and you can often find exposed Diamonds in the walls of caves. This method is often the most enjoyable because you are exploring cave systems, but this also takes most of your focus away from Diamond hunting.

Another popular way to look for diamonds is to Strip Mine. Strip Mining is the act of digging down to a certain level and creating strips where you mine in one direction in a straight line. This is often considered the most effective way to look for Diamonds because 100 percent of your focus is on finding Diamonds instead of exploring. Players will often create a hallway at a level where they want to search for diamonds, then create strip mines next to each other all along the hallway, as is shown below.

General Tips & Tricks
