After two years of development, content updates, merch sales, and memories, the original Piggy experience is being retired. On November 24, 2022, the creator of Piggy, MiniToon, took to Twitter to announce the news to his nearly one million followers. In a string of tweets, the developer explained his reasons for leaving the experience behind while encouraging fans to follow Piggy on its next endeavor, Piggy: Intercity.
Though the original Piggy experience will no longer receive new content or updates outside of the necessary bug fixes, MiniToon has no plans of shutting it down. The experience will remain open and active for those who still wish to play it past its sunset, with the final season being released on November 27, 2022, MiniToon and the rest of the Piggy team will simply be focusing their time and efforts elsewhere.
“While the journey was fantastic, I have grown so very burnt out of working on this game and have been wanting to work on new projects for a long while now,” said MiniToon. “It’s hard to continue updating a game that just doesn’t resonate with you anymore, [so] I’m going to be moving on to other projects. I have so many fresh ideas for games in my head, and unfortunately having to go back to update [Piggy] just holds me from really embracing my creativity.”
As for the future of Piggy, the titular character, along with its entire cast, will continue in the Piggy: Intercity experience, which is currently in its public demo stage.
“Of course, for those looking for more Piggy, Piggy’s story isn’t over yet and will continue in Piggy: Intercity,” said MiniToon. “However, it’s a huge project and even with a sizable team will take some time to make. I’m sure if you stick around, it’ll be worth the wait!”
While many fans were upset or disheartened by the announcement, others took to the replies to share their love for Piggy and excitement for its continued journey.
“It has been an amazing journey,” said DaMrCatPlays. “I met so many people because of Piggy; I have made so many memories that it feels unreal that Piggy is ending. I want to thank you MiniToon, and thank all of you guys in the Piggy community that have made my life better with Piggy. Hope to see you in Intercity.”
For many, Piggy was more than just a Roblox experience, it was a community. A community of players who all found joy in the simplicity of Piggy and together watched it grow from a small test project to a full-blown, story-based RPG with over 11 billion visits. In some cases, Piggy even served as an escape for players—a place where they could leave everything in the real world behind, be themselves, and come together with friends to laugh their problems away, even if only temporarily.
“Thank you so much MiniToon for the great adventure you brought us,” said CertifiedSkelly. “I was close to quitting Roblox until I discovered this game; [without it] I wouldn’t be where I am today. You are a fantastic developer with a fantastic fantasy for a game. Nothing is supposed to last forever and that is something we have to accept in life, but this game will be treasured in my heart. Thank you MiniToon.”
“It was so great being a part of this community,” said YtStxrmy. “Piggy really opened up a new chapter in my life, something that takes up my free time, but in the best way possible. Even when I was struggling in real life, Piggy (and the community/social media in general) was an escape for me, somewhere I could just be [myself]. Even if the main Piggy game is ending, that doesn’t mean the community, or even the Piggy genre is ending. There’s Intercity of course, and I’m sure it’s going to turn out amazing. Thank you Mini.”
As players continue to voice their goodbyes to Piggy online, it’s important to remember that, even if the experience doesn’t mean anything to you, it could mean the world to someone else and to always be kind.
