Revenue generated by mobile videogames continued rising on the first quarter of 2017, according to a report by Sensor Tower Store Intelligence. While that is not really surprising, it’s interesting to note that the biggest percentage increase was noted by far on those titles on the Google Play Store, with a total revenue catching up to the sum generated by Apple’s App Store.
In general, worldwide revenue from mobile titles grew approximately 53% from the results from Q1 2016. Translated into numbers, that means a gross revenue of $11.9 billion, up from the $7.8 billion last year. With a 35% increase and $6.6 billion revenue, the Apple Store on iOS devices continued to be the top platform in generating income. However, the numbers of the Google Play Store surprised with a boost of a stunning 83%, and $5.3 billion.
As for the top performing videogames, the titles with a strong pressence in Japan proved to be on top of the indutry, with Monster Strike (pictured above) and Fate/Grand Order claiming the top 2 spots in the overall list. Type-Moon’s game had an excellent performance in the last quarter, going from a top 10 position at the end of 2016 to reaching number 2 in the overall list thanks to a second position on the Google Play list and a top five on the App Store.
Tencent’s King of Glory secured a place in the overall top 10 thanks to a strong performance in China, enough to place it at number 3 of the App Store list. There are not good news for Pokémon GO, which dropped from its number 4 position at the end of 2016 to number 8 on Q1 2017. It seems like iOS users were the ones who lost most interest in the game, with the title dropping out of the top 10 most grossing games of the platform, while it placed at number 6 on the Google Play list.
As for Nintendo’s Fire Emblem Heroes, the revenue on its first quarter in the market were enough to make it enter Google Play’s top 10 list, with more than 75% of the grosses coming from Japan.
