Last week saw the release of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne on PC.  This pleased a great many people as the PC version of the game is out of step with the console versions so PC players have had to look on longingly at their console counterparts as they enjoyed the snowy DLC starting in September.  PC players were, therefore, super excited to finally be able to cavort around on grappling hooks in the frigid tundra.  Unfortunately, it seems that a decent number of players are seeing the game accidentally delete their save file.

The problem seems to be mostly affecting players who haven’t picked up Monster Hunter World in a long time, leading to speculation that the issue has something to do with a mismatch between the pre-DLC save file and the DLC itself not quite getting along.  In-between the game’s initial release and the release of Iceborne there have been several key updates that are needed otherwise you may well run into this problem as Iceborne will be unable to recognize your older save file.

For more information, you can check out this Reddit thread for tips on how to potentially recover your lost save file and this steam thread on how to avoid the problem altogether but if you don’t have time for that I will give a quick break down below.

Even if you haven’t purchased Iceborne if you boot the game up right now you may receive the following message: “Failed to read saved data for Monster Hunter: Iceborne. Create new save data?”

DO NOT SELECT YES.  If you do you may lose your save file.  Instead, exit the game.  You may receive another message: “Do you want to close without saving?” Click yes.  And then don’t open Monster Hunter World back up until either you have received word from Capcom about a fix for this issue OR you endeavor on your own using this guide which a lot of this information was taken from.

Be careful and good luck out there.
